About the Sugilite Gemstone

Sugilite [pronounced /ˈsuːɡɨlaɪt/] is a rare purple gem first discovered in 1944 by the Japanese petrologist Ken-ichi Sugi. The only gem quality sugilite comes from Kalahari desert in South Africa. It is also known as luvulite.

Sugilite is a pink to purple cyclosilicate mineral that is relatively rare. It's chemical formula is: KNa2(Fe,Mn,Al)2Li3Si12O30

Sugilite crystallizes in the hexagonal system with prismatic crystals. These crystals are rarely found and their form is generally massive. It has a hardness of 5.5 to 6.5 on Mohs scale. Its specific gravity is 2.75 to 2.80. The gemstone is mostly translucent.

Sugilite was initally discovered on Iwagi Islet, Japan. It has since been discovered at Mont Saint-Hilaire, Quebec, Canada, as well as in northern Cape Province of South Africa. Reports have also placed it in Liguria and Tuscany (Italy), New South Wales (Australia) and Madhya Pradesh (India).

Note: The mineral is commonly pronounced with a soft "g", as in "ginger". However, as with most minerals, its pronunciation is intended to be the same as the person it is named after; in this case, the Japanese name Sugi has a hard "g", as in "geese": /ˈsuːɡɨlaɪt/ SOO-gi-lyet.
